Desmond is FPA’s Principal responsible for managing the Singapore office of FPA. He is a registered patent attorney in Singapore with a technical background in engineering. Recent experience includes drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the areas of manufacturing and processes, communications systems, acoustics devices, bio-mechanical medical devices, semiconductor devices, payment services, medical diagnostic devices, materials and electro-mechanical devices.

Earlier in his career, he was in-house patent counsel at a multi-national corporation dealing in consumer electronics, and was involved in setting up systems and processes for generating IP assets, optimising IP assets and managing IP costs for the corporation. In addition to his experience as an in-house counsel, his expertise also includes IP enforcement and the registration of designs. Des is fluent in spoken and written English and Mandarin.

Des has worked with clients ranging from individuals to multi-national corporations, and is passionate about assisting his clients in ensuring the sustainability of their businesses. He is very willing to share insights and information pertaining to latest developments in global patent laws either as a speaker at information sharing sessions or during client engagement sessions whenever the opportunity arises.

Des is a two-term past President of the Association of Singapore Patent Attorneys (ASPA) and remains involved as the current Vice President of ASPA. His current role as the Vice President of ASPA involves sharing his own experiences with the current President, and providing assistance to the President whenever required. He is also spearheading the efforts to improve online engagement with ASPA, and ensuring that ASPA remains relevant in the IP ecosystem both in Singapore and globally. He is keenly involved in ensuring the positive progression of the patent attorney profession in Singapore, particularly in a manner which ensures the position of the profession as an indispensable pillar in Singapore’s standing as an IP hub in Asia.
