Senior Associate of Freehills Patent Attorneys qualifies as Cosmetic Chemist

Melbourne based Senior Associate Carol Burnton, has extended her background in medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry by recently completing a diploma in cosmetic formulation.

Carol is a patent attorney with particular specialist knowledge in cosmetic and dermatological inventions in Australia having worked on a diverse range of cosmeceutical formulation inventions and cosmetics ingredient inventions including synthetic chemicals and peptides, isolated natural ingredients and naturally derived ingredients. Carol comments that, ‘Qualification as a cosmetic chemist has provided me with an even deeper understanding of the challenges that my clients face when developing and patenting their products.’

The course covered development of the full range of skin products, hair products and dyes, sunscreen and body products including, for example toothpaste, from the concept stage to full stability testing and reverse engineering. Products of diverse formulation types were studied including liquids, gels, emulsions, pastes, suspensions, spray and aerosols.

Carol is drawing on her increased technical expertise to provide clients with commercially astute advice on cosmetic patenting and create better business outcomes for clients.
