Freehills Patent Attorneys increase partner numbers

Date: 2013-05-09

Freehills Patent Attorneys is delighted to announce that Carl Harrap and Thor North will become partners from 1 July 2013.

This is an excellent outcome for our people and for our clients.

Carl Harrap (Sydney)

Carl is a member of the Physics Engineering team and specialises in patents and designs in various fields, including mobile and fixed line communications, consumer devices, electronics, electronic commerce, electromechanical devices, ophthalmic devices and software.

Carl prepares and prosecutes patent applications for internationally leading innovators based in Australia and overseas. He also has particular experience and interest in assisting his clients to defend or attack patents in patent oppositions and entitlement disputes before the Australian Patent Office and provides specialist patent and design infringement and validity advice for litigation.

Carl understands that intellectual property is an investment on which you expect a return, and that third party patents and designs can represent a substantial business risk. In this context he focuses on assisting clients to make informed decisions in line with their strategic goals.

Before moving to Freehills Patent Attorneys Carl worked at a specialist Intellectual Property Firm in New Zealand. He is a registered Patent Attorney in both Australia and New Zealand.

Thor North (Melbourne)

Thor is a patent attorney within the Physics Engineering team.

He joined Freehills in 1999 as a graduate and has worked in the Sydney and Melbourne offices of the firm. He has also spent an extended period of time on secondment with a client giving valuable insight into how IP is dealt with in a commercial setting.

He is able to quickly engage with new technology, resulting in a deep understanding of his client’s technical developments and business objectives so he can provide relevant and commercial advice. His clients include technology-driven Australian companies, mainly in the fields of physics, signal processing, computing, consumer products and communications. Thor also acts for offshore companies seeking patent and design protection in Australia and New Zealand.

Thor’s practice deals with all aspects of patent drafting and prosecution, patent validity and infringement advice. Thor also has a strong practice advising clients in relation to registered design protection.

Thor is a registered Patent Attorney in both Australia and New Zealand.
