Andrew Foers

Andy has a broad scientific background spanning immunology, bioinformatics, molecular biology and in vitro diagnostics. He works with clients to understand the technical and commercial value of their inventions, with a particular focus on life sciences, biotechnology, diagnostics and biomarkers.

Before joining FPA, Andy completed a PhD in Medical Biology at WEHI and the University of Melbourne, followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Cambridge and the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology at the University of Oxford. His research focused on the immune system and inflammatory disease, including biomarkers for rheumatoid arthritis, extracellular vesicles in joint disease, blood cancer diagnostics, immune disease classification and the cellular drivers of uveitis.

Andy’s research experience helps him work closely with inventors to identify the contribution their work makes over existing technology, interpret complex experimental data, and draft patent specifications that are technically accurate and well supported. He is particularly interested in the strategic aspects of patent protection, including how an invention can be framed to capture its commercial value and how careful drafting can help establish a robust claim position.

Since joining FPA, Andy has developed experience in patentability assessments, patent drafting and prosecution strategy. He assists clients with identifying patentable inventions, strengthening their patent position, and considering strategies that may enhance the commercial value of their patent portfolio.

Andy has authored peer-reviewed publications in journals including Cell Reports Medicine, Arthritis & Rheumatology, Journal of Extracellular Vesicles, Clinical & Translational Immunology and Scientific Reports, reflecting his experience across immunology, molecular biology, bioinformatics and inflammatory disease research.
