About Afnan

Passionate about bridging the gap between cutting-edge scientific research and real-world application by helping innovators protect and commercialise their discoveries through intellectual property.

Before joining FPA, Afnan completed a PhD in Biomedical Science at Victoria University of Wellington. Prior to commencing her doctorate, she worked as a Research Assistant investigating the signalling pathways through which clozapine, an antipsychotic drug, reduces immune cell infiltration into the central nervous system in a preclinical model of multiple sclerosis. This early work deepened her interest in neuroimmunology and sparked a strong interest in the therapeutic potential of repurposed drugs for treating chronic inflammatory diseases.

Afnan’s PhD research built upon this foundation, focusing on the role of microglia and their modulation by kappa opioid receptor agonists under pro- and anti-inflammatory conditions. Her work aimed to uncover mechanisms by which neuroinflammation could be targeted in multiple sclerosis.

Motivated by a desire to see scientific innovation translated into meaningful real-world outcomes, Afnan transitioned into the intellectual property profession. She joined FPA as a Patent Scientist to apply her scientific training to the protection and commercialisation of inventions in the chemical and biotechnology sectors. Having worked hands-on in research environments, Afnan is well positioned to support innovators in the life sciences industry and is passionate about helping clients protect and commercialise their discoveries.

Afnan has authored and co-authored peer-reviewed publications in leading journals, including Clinical & Translational Immunology, Frontiers in Neurology, Behavioural Brain Research, and Cell Signalling.
